My son came home on Monday not really talking about his day. But I got quite the surprise when he discussed his day at supper.

He shared with us that he kicked a girl. I was shocked. I mean, I’m raising him to be a gentleman. To do good, to walk humbly, love mercy and use his words wisely. And there he goes kicking a girl. What was he thinking? What should I think? I was furious, sad and frustrated all at the same time, and I’m sure hid dad felt pretty much the same.

My hubby just had to get some words in “he should have chosen his words”, then I intervened and told him to wait so we could hear the whole story before he got upset.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Phil. 4:8

My son’s friends were teasing this girl’s brother, and she gave my son the blame and told him she was going to tell the teacher on him. My son is a child who doesn’t like to be blamed, especially if it’s not true. So he gave way to his frustration by kicking her which led to the girls friend grabbing him by his shirt and tearing off the button. Now I was upset because all of this just got out of hand. I don’t like fighting.

I told my son that it was unacceptable to hit a girl, no matter what she did or didn’t do. Not to mention the fact that he just allowed his friends to make fun of her brother.

PSALM 1:1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.

He is supposed to be the change. I know peer pressure is pretty hectic. But I want him to be a leader, not a follower. I asked him what Jesus did when He was mocked, ridiculed, spat at and beat. My son replied, “nothing mom” to which his sister replied “Jesus asked God to forgive them because they didn’t know what they were doing”.

And that’s just it. What would Jesus do? I told my son that every time he was going to give vent to his anger he should ask himself that question. I know it won’t be easy. And if that ever happened again I would give him a hiding he would never forget.

Proverbs 23:14-16 Punish him with the rod and save his soul from death. My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad; my inmost being will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.

I also told him to go to his teacher before things got out of hand in that way I could intervene if she didn’t do anything about the situation. But because he chose his own will I couldn’t.

When we choose to do our will, God can’t intervene, or at least He can but wont. Because we have chosen our way and not His and that leads to heartache. But when we give Him our problems He can sort it out. He will fight for us, we don’t have to!!

Exodus 14:14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Even as grownups we mess things up terribly. We are meant to be an example to our children. We are meant to be an example to our friends, family and peers. But we fail, daily. But we can have assurance that even then God still loves us and becomes our strength, if we allow Him into that situation.

2nd Corinthians 12: 9-10 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

So before you give vent to your anger today ask yourself, What would Jesus do? And be reminded He will fight for you if you let Him.

With love always
